A Secluded Swiss Retreat With Amazing Views And an Orangery

The home, built in 1947, was recently remodeled

Listing of the Day

Location: Bursinel, Switzerland
Price: CHF17.5 million (US$17.54 million)

Mountain and lake views surround this secluded retreat in Switzerland. The Jura mountain range forms its backdrop and it lies on the shores of Lake Geneva, facing the water and the Alps in the distance, including its highest peak, Mont Blanc.

The house sits on elevated ground, but is hidden from view from the land, creating a secluded setting with panoramic views. The grounds, meanwhile, are formed of a series of terraced gardens leading down to the lake, where there is a wooden jetty and a hidden boathouse.

Built in 1947 in French and Italian styles, it has an elegant collection of rooms with stone and herringbone timber flooring, window shutters and reclaimed 18th and 19th century wood paneling, giving it the feeling of an older property.

Belgian interior designer Axel Vervoordt redesigned the home a few years ago, incorporating a minimalist design, with highly textured walls, soothing earthy tones and reclaimed period pieces. The rooms are filled with a bright natural light, which reflects off the surrounding water.

The highlight of the house is its orangery: Oriented east to west, it catches the path of the sun through its Versailles-style bow windows on three sides, which offer more than 180-degree views of the lake. The views are described in the brochure as a “series of tableaux … [that] evolve with the seasons.”

Every room is different but is linked by “craftsmanship, materials and meticulous attention to detail,” said David Johnson, of Inhous, an independent residential property consultant, who’s handling the estate’s sale.

The property is being sold off-market, which means it is not listed for sale on property listing websites and only sent to registered buyers.

The 7,534-square-foot house has six bedrooms including a master suite and an en-suite bathroom as well as four additional bathrooms.

Amenities

There is a library, a buddha/Zen room, a fitness suite and sauna on the lower-ground floor and a spa bath in the master en-suite bathroom.

The grounds include parking for up to nine cars, a garage for a single car, an outdoor kitchen with a barbecue and a waterfront area that includes a small beach.

Design Pedigree

The property was designed by Axel Vervoordt, who is known for his minimalist, highly textured interiors and has worked for the likes of Kanye West, according to Australian Vogue, while the gardens have been designed by Martin J. Hallinan, an award-winning landscape architect.

Neighborhood Notes

Situated 19 miles from Geneva, Bursinel is part of Nyon, a lakeside town surrounded by vineyards in the canton of Vaud. There is a diverse range of skiing opportunities nearby in the Alps, which is home to Europe’s best winter sports destinations.
